Session: Living the Hashtag PineLife: Is 2022 the year of mobile Linux?
Pine64 seems to be succeeding where others have failed, in delivering multiple mobile GNU/Linux devices that provide expected features, while using very little nonfree software and being relatively affordable.
Based on my experience daily driving Pine64 devices like the PinePhone, PineTab, PineTime, and PineBook Pro for the last few years, I will:
- share an honest scorecard of the strikes and gutters, to help you decide if these devices are right for you to use or recommend;
- survey the various project communities that have developed around the devices, including distro options and information about how you might be able to get involved and contribute;
- report on the pieces of nonfree software that are still required and the prospects for replacing them;
- speculate about how Pine64 has succeeded where others have not (yet), and what this might mean for future efforts; and
- talk bigger picture about the meaning and importance of affordable mobile device freedom in a networked world.
