Session: Keeping an Eye on your Cloud Native Applications with OpenTelemetry

As cloud native applications become more complex, being able to observe these applications for performance bottlenecks and debugging issues becomes critical. Observation techniques such as metrics collection and distributed tracing are valuable tools for performing these activities. The OpenTelemetry open source project has emerged as the de facto standard for providing metrics collection and distributed tracing across a cloud native application workflow. In this talk, we provide an overview of the OpenTelemetry architecture, its instrumentation techniques, and its key features such as distributed trace spans, metric collection, and its use of contexts. We also describe how OpenTelemetry is able to provide vendor-agnostic data collection and illustrate examples of its use.
