ATO + MLH = Better Open Source Future
All Things Open (ATO) is the premiere conference for those revolutionizing open source. At Major League Hacking (MLH), we are a half-million strong global community of rising technologists.
There is an existential threat to open source. The Open Source Issues Gap occurs when the count of open issues outpaces the open source community’s ability to close them. The only solution is to increase the supply of great new Open Source Citizens.
We at MLH and our partner, ATO, regard it as essential to welcome and involve the next generation of open source developers. It is why you will see a number of MLHers at ATO.
Unfortunately, most early-career technologists have not contributed to open source for three reasons. They:
- Are unconfident about contributing.
- Do not know how to start.
- Do not see themselves represented in the open source community.
ATO and MLH call on the community to take action. Get your company involved as a sponsor of the MLH Fellowship.
Do you share our belief in enabling maintainers to work with diverse new contributors? Then be a part of the MLH Fellowship! It’s how the next generation of great Open Source Citizens are learning to close thousands of issues. MLH Fellows are providing maintainers the leverage they need to get their arms around the challenges that face them. The Fellowship is the mechanism by which we are educating new contributors to make high-quality PRs and close issues, not create an onslaught of items for a small group of maintainers to resolve. We are seeing long-term contributors who continue to contribute or join the project team (as a maintainer or a dedicated hire).
We could not be more excited to support ATO in its mission to serve the revolutionaries behind the open source movement as it stands today! Fill up your calendar with ATO goodness by joining awesome open source leaders and the wonderful MLH team at the MLH Halloween Happy Hour as well as at these three upcoming sessions:
- “Where do Great Open Source Contributors, Maintainers, & Hires Come From?” with Demetris Cheatham (Senior Director, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Strategy, GitHub), Jon Gottfried (Co-founder & Head of Partnerships, Major League Hacking), Akersh Srivastava (Head of Developer Relations, Meta), and Stephen Augustus (Head of Open Source, Cisco) on Tuesday, Nov 1 at 12:45 pm-1:30 pm US/ET
- “AWS/MLH: A Framework for Onboarding Open Source Contributors” with Matt Auerbach (Open Source Lead, AWS Amplify) and Max Mizzi (VP of Growth, Major League Hacking) on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 3:45 pm-4:30 pm US/ET
- “Open Source: The Next Generation” with Swift (CEO & Co-Founder, Major League Hacking) on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd at 12:45 pm-1:30 pm US/ET.
